How to choose a CBD supplement – and what you should avoid

CBD oil – or snake oil? How to choose a high-quality CBD supplement – and what you should avoid

Britain is in the middle of a health and wellness boom, inspired by the promise of CBD oil.

Also known as Cannabidiol, CBD oil is an active ingredient found in hemp, a strain of the Cannabis sativa L. plant.

Unlike its counterpart, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which causes the ‘high’ from marijuana, CBD has no psychoactive effects.

Sales of legal CBD products grew to £690 million last year, making the UK the world’s second largest consumer of cannabinoids after the United States.

But the arrival of CBD has brought confusion along with all the hope and expectation.

Feeling confused about CBD oil? You’re not alone.

In a dizzying market of CBD products and promises – from gummies to drops, creams and drinks – deciding which one to trust feels like a lucky dip.

Around 45% of respondents to a YouGov poll about CBD products in the UK said they were not confident that they are labelled correctly or properly tested.

In a shocking social media scam, one CBD company pushed unsupported claims of ‘miracle’ health benefits, even using fake celebrity endorsements to sell their products.

‘There are no legally approved health claims in the UK for CBD, so if you see a company claiming health benefits for their CBD product, that’s an immediate red flag,’ says Dr Miriam Ferrer, PhD, the head of product development at FutureYou Cambridge, the developer of an advanced CBD supplement called CBD Oil+.

‘CBD providers are strictly regulated about what can be claimed – and that’s as it should be, until the benefits are scientifically confirmed,’ she says.

Some supporters believe using CBD oil may affect health and wellbeing, but scientific confirmation is still ongoing as many of the claims are based on animal studies.

Scientific interest in the efficacy of CBD has skyrocketed, with more than 3,000 research papers published in just the last three years.

‘Given the lack of approved claims at the moment, the best way for people to find out about CBD is to do their own research online,’ advises Dr Ferrer.

‘Most of the scientific studies into the effects of using CBD oil are based on high-quality, broad-spectrum formulations, so those are the best option – and that’s what we’ve done with CBD Oil+.’

CBD Oil+ contains a highly purified, broad-spectrum CBD oil formulation currently undergoing a clinical study at Liverpool University.

FutureYou Cambridge began its development of a CBD supplement with the help of Professor Michael Heinrich, a leading expert in ethnopharmacology and medicinal plant research at the University College London School of Pharmacy.

‘Many of the supplements we looked at contained less CBD than is claimed on the label,’ says Professor Heinrich. ‘If people are considering taking one, they should ensure that it is supplied by a reputable company and created using a pure extract.’

After looking at the science, the team decided that a ‘broad-spectrum’ extract was essential.

‘Broad-spectrum’ means that as well as CBD, the oil also contains a range of the many other cannabinoids naturally occurring in the hemp plant, such as Cannabichromene (CBC) and Cannabigerol (CBG).

‘That’s because there’s a lot of scientific research proposing that these other cannabinoids work together with CBD,’ explains Dr Ferrer. ‘This is known as the ‘entourage effect’.’

Many CBD products currently on the UK market are 100% pure CBD, made either using synthetic molecules or taken from the hemp plant as ‘isolates’ to avoid contamination with THC.

‘But if it’s just CBD, will it really be beneficial?’ asks Dr Ferrer. ‘The scientific research is still ongoing.’

But creating a high-quality, broad-spectrum CBD extract that excludes THC is a significant challenge.

FutureYou Cambridge has developed CBD Oil+

To create CBD Oil+, the oil is extracted from the hemp plant in a state-of-the-art process called ‘Supercritical CO2 Extraction’ using pressurised gas.

It’s then refined even more, using Centrifugal Partition Chromatography to separate the CBD and the desired broad-spectrum cannabinoids from any impurities.

This also reduces the amount of THC to below the detectable limit, far below the UK legal limit of less than 0.2%

Finally, it’s distilled to produce a high-purity golden oil consisting of around 90-95% CBD and at least 5% other high-quality minor cannabinoids such as CBG.

Each CBD Oil+ capsule is made acid-resistant to release the oil directly into the gut.

Each vegan-friendly capsule is also gluten- and lactose-free.

Since its launch, the team has been heartened by customers’ responses to CBD Oil+.

Jackie Howard-Birt, a 74-year-old art teacher says: ‘I’ve always been impressed at how FutureYou Cambridge supplements are backed by a lot of scientific research.’

‘I’ve always been impressed at how FutureYou Cambridge supplements are backed by a lot of scientific research,’ says 74-year-old Jackie Howard-Birt, an art teacher from Barnstable.

‘So when they brought out CBD Oil+, I thought, that’s a good idea.

‘I knew, as with vitamins, that you had to take it for a few weeks to let it get into your body and start building up. And I’m so pleased with CBD Oil+.’

74-year-old Rosemary Howard, a former marketing director for an asset management firm, agrees.

‘It’s far easier to take than putting drops in my mouth,’ she says. ‘I just take it every day now. I’ve been on it for more than two years, taking it continuously.’

73-year-old Christine Rawson, who used to run a charity helping people with drug and alcohol problems, began taking CBD Oil+ towards the end of the last year, during a very difficult time in her life.

‘I was going for various tests at the hospital and I didn’t know what the outcome was going to be,’ she says.

‘And I had to isolate most of the time because of COVID. So of course, that also had quite an impact on my mental health.

‘I already used FutureYou Cambridge supplements. So I decided to try CBD Oil+. I also cut out caffeinated coffee. And I definitely felt some improvement.

‘I now take my CBD Oil+ every day.’

Adam Cleevely, CEO of FutureYou Cambridge says: ‘Proper quality and safety checks will help more people feel confident that they can trust high-quality products like CBD Oil+.’

This year will see the UK become the first country in the world to regulate CBD food products, with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) demanding that all CBD producers file applications with toxicology data to prove their products are safe.

However, we probably won’t see a list of authorised products until later on this year. In the meantime, some cowboys will be free to roam the UK marketplace.

‘We think regulation by the FSA is a very good thing,’ says Adam Cleevely, CEO of FutureYou Cambridge. ‘Proper quality and safety checks will help more people feel confident that they can trust high-quality products like CBD Oil+.

‘The FSA advises vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, not to take CBD products. And if you’re on existing medication, we’d advise you to consult your doctor first.’

‘Otherwise it’s safe for people to try CBD Oil+. For a limited time only we’re giving you the chance to try CBD Oil+ for £10 including delivery. That’s an £18 saving and a great opportunity to try a broad-spectrum CBD supplement developed here in the UK, in Cambridge.’*
