He removed the cord from his dressing gown, wrapped it around her neck and said, ‘I’m going to do jail time for this,’ before choking her until she she passed out and her eyes rolled back into her head.
Prosecutor Rachel Knight said: ‘He thought that he was going to break her neck.’
However, Christine regained consciousness and alerted a neighbour, who called police to the couple’s home.
In a victim impact statement Mrs Simson said the only thing she didn’t miss since her husband had been in custody was his snoring.
She said: ‘We had a really good marriage – Andrew gave me the best years of my life.
‘We rubbed along so well – he put up with my cooking and I put up with his snoring.’
She added: ‘I’ve lost my soulmate and part of me. I feel bereft, absolutely devastated.
‘I miss him a lot and I hope he gets the help he needs. He’s a sweetheart who doesn’t know when to stop drinking.’
The choking happened just five days after a community order preventing him from contacting her had expired. He had received the order for previously attacking her.
Judge Richard Twomlow said Simson was a dangerous man and the public had to be protected from him in a ‘domestic context’.

He was also given a restraining order preventing him from coming within 100 yards of Christine.
The prosecution offered no evidence on a charge of attempted murder.
