Children found the body of a nine-year-old girl decomposing in a wardrobe – before neighbours killed the murder suspect.
Boipelo Sesele disappeared while playing with other kids on September 1 in South Africa’s Free State province.
On Saturday afternoon, September 12, local kids noticed a “bad smell” nearby.
Free State police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele said: “It is alleged that the children were playing in the street when they sensed a bad smell coming from a shack not far from Boipelo’s home and alerted community members who’ve been assisting to look for the child.
“They went to the shack and found it locked, forced entry and opened the wardrobe where the smell was coming from and found the body of Sesele, then alerted the police.”
The owner then appeared and was attacked by locals, News 24 reports.
The suspect was taken to safety but later pronounced dead by emergency services.
Another local community leader who helped in the search, identified as as Mr Thebe, said the shack was “in a mess”.
He said Boipelo's hand was "showing from outside”, adding: "She was decomposed. It broke me, but I thank God we have finally found closure.”
Attempted murder arrest after police officer stabbed in late night incident
The girl's mum Lynette reported her daughter missing after allegedly leaving her to play with other children as she went to visit a friend.
After getting back, Lynette discovered that Boipelo was missing.
Her friends told her that Boipelo had been talking to a tall man wearing a pair of blue overalls.
The pair of them went to a shop and never returned, Makhele earlier said.
