North Korea’s leader believes the animals are carrying the pathogen across the border from China. Officials across the country have been spotted shooting at pigeons.

The hermit state issued an extraordinary order to “eradicate street cats” to stop any possible spread of Covid.

According to Daily NK, authorities said the measure is “to prevent coronavirus [from entering] through animals coming over from China”.

Pigeons are also part of the order, handed down in Hyesan, Sinuiju.

It comes days after the North Korean leader banned all Chinese medicines at major hospitals in the capital Pyongyang.

As well as issuing an order to remove Chinese medicines from Pyongyang hospitals, the Supreme leader told researchers to stop Chinese coronavirus vaccine trials and begin producing a domestic jab.

Mr Kim also recently banned “non-socialist” hairstyles like the mullet.

New laws prohibit spikey and dyed hair, and according to South Korean newspaper Daily NK, the provincial Youth League published a document on “proper” hairstyles.

The paper stated that mullets and other hairstyles are “anti-socialist behaviour” and are part of the “yellow wind of capitalism”.

Ripped and skinny jeans, as well as lip and nose piercings, have been prohibited too.
