Lee Rigby killer fighting for life in hospital with severe Covid

One of the killers of Fusilier Lee Rigby is fighting for his life in hospital after being struck down with coronavirus, according to reports.

Michael Adebowale, who was jailed in 2014 for the murder, is said to have tested positive for Covid-19 two weeks ago.

The 29-year-old was taken from Broadmoor psychiatric hospital after his condition deteriorated last week, according to the Sun.

He is receiving oxygen on a Covid ward, but has not been put on a ventilator – although intensive care is the next step if his condition worsens.

A source told the Sun: “He’s in a very bad way and fighting for every breath.

“It’s reached the stage where it’s a 24/7 battle. He’s very young to be affected so badly.”

The murdered soldier’s mum Lyn Rigby, 53, said: “It would not be justice for Covid to take this man prematurely and end the sentence handed to him.”

True justice for her son is to see the killers stay behind bars and serve every day of their sentence, she added.

Adebowale and Michael Adebolajo, 36, mowed down the British Army soldier, 25, and hacked him to death outside barracks in Woolwich, south east London in May 2013.

Dad-of-one Lee, a drummer in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers from Middleton, Greater Manchester, was off duty when he was brutally murdered.

They were both convicted of his murder in December 2013.

At the sentencing in 2014, Adebolajo was handed a whole life term – meaning he will never be released – while Adebowale was locked up for at least 45 years.

Figures show a further 610 Covid deaths were recorded in the UK on Sunday, taking the total to 97,939.
