London Bridge is closed ‘after a stolen van crashed into cars and a bus before the driver jumped 30ft into the River Thames’

  • Bridge was closed this morning after suspected van thief jumped into the water
  • He allegedly crashed into several cars and a bus before leaping into the Thames 
  • Suspect was recovered from the water and has been arrested for vehicle theft  

London Bridge has reopened this morning after a van driver who was being chased by police leapt into the River Thames.

The Met Police were called to the central London spot at around 8am this morning. 

Officers said a stolen van crashed into cars and a bus before the driver jumped out and into the river 30ft below.

The Marine Policing Unit, the Coastguard and the London Ambulance Service were all in attendance. 

The Bridge has been reopened Southbound however buses remain on diversion northbound, according to Transport for London

Police tweeted that the man was out of the water and under arrest and confirm the incident was not terror related 

The man was rescued from the water and was being treated at the scene by paramedics. 

He is expected to be taken to hospital – and was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.    

The Bridge has been reopened Southbound however buses remain on diversion northbound, according to Transport for London.
