Man beaten up and ‘spat on’ outside M&S store as shoppers beg attackers to stop

Distressing footage has shown a man being savagely attacked in the doorway to a Marks & Spencer store.

The shocking scenes were filmed in Liverpool city centre yesterday evening (December 20).

It begins with a man in a blue top and jeans hurling punches at another man dressed in black.

He drags his rival to the ground before another man in a black hood joins in – with the pair of them continuing to punch and kick the outnumbered man.

Shoppers watching the fight unfold can be heard screaming in horror before several step in to break it up.

As the attackers walk away, the black-hooded man appears to chant “Manchester Manchester” at the crowd.

Someone behind the camera then throws an object at him.

Merseyside Police have now appealed for anyone with information about what happened to come forward, reports the Liverpool Echo.

A police spokesperson said: "We were contacted at 5.40pm on Sunday 20 December following reports a male had been spat at and assaulted by three unknown males on Basnett Street in Liverpool city centre.

"The males made off before patrols arrived. The man suffered cuts and bruising to his head. Enquiries were carried out in the local area to trace the men.

"Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 20000772434."

It comes after footage emerged of shoppers clashing with security guards inside a Morrisons store, in an unrelated incident.

According to witnesses, the scuffle broke out after three youths brought a push bike into the supermarket.
