Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was almost assassinated by a Russian hit squad swooping in on parachutes.

The former actor has revealed that on the first day of the war on February 24 earlier this year, two attempts were made to storm the presidential compound while he was inside with his wife and two children.

In a sudden panic, entrances to the building were barricaded with whatever was in reach as Zelenskyy and others armed up with automatic weapons and bullet proof vests.

Zelenskyy, 44, survived the attempted assassination and kidnap plot before going on to inspire his nation and allies in defiance of Putin's invasion.

Following his brush with death which he only revealed publicly on Friday, Zelenskyy took to the streets of Ukraine and told a camera: "We're all here. Our military is here. Citizens in society are here.

"We're all here defending our independence, our country, and it will stay this way."

When advised to seek refuge in a secure bunker or even evacuate the country for nearby Poland, the brave President refused and has remained in his home since.
