Rishi Sunak’s pool uses so much energy ‘he upgraded local electricity network’

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had to have his local power grid upgraded so he can heat his new swimming pool, it's been reported.

The National Grid around the former chancellor's constituency home in Yorkshire was reportedly upgraded despite its remote location.

The rich bloke’s power upgrade comes as thousands of households across the country struggle to pay their energy bills.

A new National Grid connection had to be established to his Grade II listed manor running across open fields and a large amount of equipment was fitted by engineers, theGuardianreports.

The PM is understood to be footing the bill for the upgrade himself after he got the new 12-metre (40ft) heated swimming pool installed.

He bought the house for £1.5million in 2015 after he became the MP for the constituency of Richmond.

Last year, the Northern Echo reported it would cost the politician £13,000 per year to heat the pool.

His home for the weekends, he has also recently installed a gym and tennis court.

In addition to the ongoing cost of heating the pool, Sunak is thought to have spent a sum somewhere in the tens of thousands on the upgrade.

Across the UK, many local pools and baths have been forced to reduce their opening hours to meet increasingly costly energy bills.

Calls have this week been put on the government to get it to help out the nation’s public swimming pools, with 350 understood to have taken action to reduce costs or close.

Swimming pools in Rishi Sunak’s local area are included in those forced to take measures to meet the cost of energy.

Funding of the pool has come from Sunak’s own pocket and there is no suggestion he used his position or influence for preferential treatment from regional system maintainer Northern Powergrid.

The Prime Minister also has a flat in California that looks over the Pacific ocean and a house in London.
