School shooter, 16, who shot 5 and killed one 'gravely ill' after suicide bid

A 16 year-old gunman who killed two schoolmates and two others is gravely ill after trying to shoot himself on his birthday.

The unnamed suspect reportedly turned his weapon on himself after Thursday’s deadly shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California. He is said to have shot himself on the high school campus and was rushed to hospital.

KNX reported that the boy posted ‘Have fun at school tomorrow Saugus’ on Instagram yesterday. The victims killed in the shooting are a 16 year-old girl and a 14 year-old boy.

Initial reports claimed the shooter, who attends Saugus High, had killed himself.

But Sheriff Alex Villanueva tweeted: ‘Update regarding the shooting at #SaugusHigh, suspect is in custody and being treated at a local hospital.’

Police, sheriff’s deputies and SWAT teams surrounded his home on Sycamore Drive, around half a mile from the school.

Officials confirmed the boy is ‘no longer a threat’ and that he is not in custody, but have not commented further.

He opened fire at his own school around 8am PST on Thursday morning, just as school was beginning.

Six people are reported to have been injured, all of whom were students. Two of the victims are critically ill.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Office chatted to victims who were still conscious to identify the gunman, and raced to his home shortly afterwards.

Armed officers were seen outside his home, which is now said to have been combed by officers.
