Dramatic footage shows the moment a couple came dangerously close to a bison at the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

Video from April 17 shows the unidentified duo within just a few feet of the massive beast at the park’s famous geyser, Old Faithful.

While the bison was walking near the boardwalk around the geyser, the couple snapped a selfie with it.

A few seconds later, the woman is seen attempting to pet the bison before quickly pulling away when it swatted at her with its tail

A few seconds later, the woman is seen attempting to pet the bison before quickly pulling a way when it swatted at her with its tail.

‘Did she just try and pet it?’ one person in the background is heard asking. ‘Yup!’ the man who recorded the incident responded.

The woman is then seen walking away from the large mammal as another man walked over to the area. No one was injured during the incident.

A male American bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. They have horns that aren’t just for grubbing around for tasty shoots.

Bison often behave much like cattle, lumbering about and lazing in the sunshine. But when they get a mind to, they can run up to 40mph.

Any less than 75 feet away from a bison is unsafe, especially since Yellowstone’s wild animals are free to roam where they please. If a bison is near a trail, don’t go down that trail, park officials have warned.
