'Sonic boom' rocks Liverpool after 'big explosion' heard over city

A "SONIC boom" rocked Liverpool today after a "big explosion" was heard over the city.

Residents in Clubmoor, Aintree and Liverpool said they heard the loud noise this morning.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 showed a jet flying over the area at the time the sound was heard.

A sonic boom is heard when an object travels through the air faster than the speed of sound.

To break the sound barrier, aircraft need to hit a speed of 770mph.
