Summer is the smell of fresh tennis balls straight out of the can

The Age has asked prominent Victorians to reveal their favourite places and activities of the summer holiday season.

Today’s instalment comes from Craig Tiley, the chief executive of Tennis Australia. This year will be Tiley’s 10th heading the organisation that runs the Australian Open and the sport more broadly across the country.

What does a Victorian summer mean to you?

It’s all about the tennis. Summer in Melbourne is the Australian Open, not just for me, but for so many in Melbourne and Victoria.

First place you take visitors?

Gimlet, one of Melbourne’s grooviest restaurants.

In January, of course, it would be the Australian Open, and also to one of the many great restaurants we have here in Melbourne. Maha, Gimlet, Farmer’s Daughter and Grill Americano are current favourites and always fantastic.

Secret spot you escape to?

Why would I let you know my secret spot?

The best summer food is…

A burger anywhere at the Australian Open is my go-to.

I know it’s summer when I smell…

Summer Lovin’ from Grease.

The worst thing about summer is…

There’s nothing bad about summer.

Guilty pleasure?

Always chocolate.
