Woman describes alleged police shooting live on radio

A man appears to have been shot at by police in the car park of a suburban Melbourne shopping centre.

A woman named Pauline called radio station 3AW's Neil Mitchell program about 9.15am on Tuesday to describe the tense scene, before listeners heard gun shots in the background.

"There's a fellow outside Chemist Warehouse at Lilydale Market brandishing quite a large knife, he was standing there for about five minutes, obviously surrounded by police but now he has decided to go walking through the car park," she said.

"There are guns drawn and they are yelling at him to put the knife down but he doesn't seem interested in that."

She said the man was "just wandering" around holding the knife by his side.

A few minutes later, the woman said the man was crossing the road to a park, before he crossed back over to the car park.

Several shots were then heard live on air.
