Woman who hacked off her own finger with an axe starts surgery fundraiser

A woman who lopped off her finger with an axe to alleviate chronic pain has launched a fundraiser for surgery to help ease her ongoing agony.

Megan Cullen, 29, had suffered extreme pain in her right index finger after catching it in a car door when she was 18-years-old.

A raft of different painkillers and two separate surgeries failed to relieve her of the pain, which she felt at all times of day.

Finding the agony unbearable, Megan from Cork, Ireland, decided to try and perform a self amputation of her finger with an axe, in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt in 2015.

However in 2019, she tried once again, this time being successful before throwing her finger in the bin "so they couldn’t find it and try to put it back on."

Initially, her pain eased a little, but now she is different pain has emerged due to hypersensitive nerves.

Her mum Catherine now says Megan needs an operation on her right hand due to pain that has spread there.

"Clinical Regional Pain Syndrome is to do with nerve damage," Catherine told Cork’s 96FM radio station.

"She had constant pain in her finger and now has constant pain in the stump.

"Megan can’t wash her hair properly because of the pain. I have to dress her and she is physically sick from the pain and nobody can help. She was so desperate a number of years ago that she cut off her own finger to try and ease the pain."

Megan's family have launched a GoFundMe page to help raise €30,000 (£27,000) for Megan to have a operation from a private clinic to remove her knuckle and cut out the nerves that are damaged.

Catherine said: "We found a private surgeon in Dublin who can do it but it’s expensive around €30,000 as there is a lot involved in it and they have to get the pain under control before they operate.

"She has been in pain for 11 years now, I have seen my happy, joyful, confident daughter go so downhill that it is frightening."
