MARTIN Lewis has revealed a discount shop where you can get household favourites for just pennies.

Approved Food is an online retailer specialising in food that is nearing its "best-before" date but is still perfectly good to eat.

The website lists more than 2,000 products including big brands such as Cadbury, Hellmans and Walkers all at heavily discounted prices.

Approved Food states on its website that it specialises in "surplus and short-dated stock and food that is either near or just passed its best-before date".

It claims that regular customers can save around £60 by shopping on its website compared to regular high street prices.

It is important to note that nothing is sold over its "use by" which is the date foods must be consumed.

You should never consume foods after their use-by date as this could make you very ill.

Best-before dates give an idea of how long foods will last before the quality of the product is compromised, but usually, the items are still perfectly good to eat.

With it being an online shop there are some delivery charges to be taken into account.

Delivery starts from £3 for one box of up to 25kg of shopping and there is a minimum order spend of £22.50.

As you add items to your basket, a helpful tracker shows you how much the order will weigh so that you can make the most out of your delivery.

At the moment customers can save an extra 10% off everything on orders totalling £22.50 or more, using MoneySavingExpert code SEPTMSE.

This means that a pack of Walkers Wotsits really cheesy 22.5g bag currently costing 10p will be 9p with the code.

Other branded items available on the site at the time we checked include Hellmans Vegan Chipotle Mayo (270g) at £1.75.

The same mayo is selling in Waitrose for £2.80 and Morrisons for £2.60, according to the online price comparison site Trolley.co.uk.

Also on offer is a bag of Walkers Sensations roasted chicken and thyme (150g) at just 50p.

These Walkers crisps are currently retailing in Morrisons for £1.75 and Asda for £2.50.

This means buying these crisps on Approved food could save you £2 per packet at the moment.

Cans of Diet Coke (330ml) are currently priced at 25p each on the Approved Food website.

When we checked the same size of Diet Coke is retailing for £1 on Tesco's website.

As you can see by our comparisons there are some good savings to be had shopping on the website, but do bear in mind prices change all the time.

It is also worth remembering that the stock does have a high turnover due to the nature of the business, so what is available will vary.

While we can give comparisons it is worth shopping around yourself to make sure you are getting the cheapest deal.

There are other ways to shop for food that is perfectly good to eat but that would otherwise be put in the bin.

Too Good to Go is an app that allows you to rescue end-of-day food from many popular cafes, restaurants, shops and supermarkets.

All you need to do is download and set your location on the Too Good To Go app and you can choose from nearby stores listing their unsold food at a reduced price.

It is a bit of pot luck as you cannot choose what items you get as it is just whatever is left over at the end of the day.

Karma is similar to Too Good To Go, you can search for nearby food to pick up based on your location through the Karma app.

You can then purchase meals at discounted prices.

However, unlike Too Good To Go, Karma will tell you what food you are getting, so there is even less chance of it going to waste.

It is also a good idea to check out the yellow stickered products in the supermarket.

Tesco recently made a big change to its yellow sticker bargains in hundreds of its stores, making it easier for shoppers to pick up a bargain.

</picture>HOT AIR
