Biographer reveals the spy writer&#8217;s 11 affairs &#8211; including several with wives of his friends<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>John le Carr\u00e9 claimed infidelities were like a &#8216;necessary drug for my writing&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>His first marriage fell apart after he had an affair with the wife of spy colleague\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spy writer John le Carr\u00e9 was a serial love cheat who had at least 11 affairs \u2013 including several with wives of his friends \u2013 his biographer has revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The former MI6 officer, real name David Cornwell, claimed infidelities were like \u2018a necessary drug for my writing, a dangerous edge of some kind\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Mistresses included an au pair who looked after his young son, the wife of a spy colleague in Bonn, a journalist and a former model.<\/p>\n<p>His first marriage fell apart after the Bonn affair in the early 1960s, when he was writing his breakthrough novel The Spy Who Came In From The Cold.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After marrying second wife Jane, he tried to persuade the ex-model to move in with them as a m\u00e9nage \u00e0 trois, claiming her \u2018input\u2019 was important to his work.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/30\/20\/76019445-12579327-image-a-1_1696102122192.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>John le Carr\u00e9 (pictured in 2011 at the UK premiere of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) had at least 11 affairs in in his lifetime and described them as &#8216;like a necessary drug for my writing&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/30\/20\/76019429-12579327-image-a-3_1696102469980.jpg\" height=\"404\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Le Carr\u00e9 (pictured) died in 2020 aged 89, and his biographer, Adam Sisman, has revealed the author and former MI6 officer&#8217;s promiscuity in his new book with the approval of his surviving sons<\/p>\n<p>So many women shared his bed that one neighbour in West Cornwall kept a tally of more than 50 conquests.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0John le Carr\u00e9&#8217;s mistress \u2014 thought to be 25 years younger than the spy author \u2014 reveals their secret love life was just as intriguing as his books<\/h3>\n<p>Writing in yesterday\u2019s Times Magazine, biographer Adam Sisman recalls how the author told one lover, \u2018I must go and lie to my wife\u2019, before rising from the hotel bed and phoning Jane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He was serially unfaithful.\u2019 Sisman adds. \u2018I was able to identify 11 women with whom he had affairs during the first 30 years of their marriage, and I am aware there were plenty more.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Most conquests were younger than him \u2013 in one case by 40 years \u2013 and several were fictionalised in his novels.<\/p>\n<p>Sisman adds that one pal told the writer \u2018he would need a different woman for each book, advice David appears to have taken to heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Another friend noted, \u201cHe only notices women when they are married\u201d.\u2019 If women were a challenge, men were rivals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Several of the women with whom he had affairs were married to friends of his; this might happen by accident once, or even twice, but with David it happened again and again.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Sisman says he decided not to reveal Cornwell\u2019s affairs in his original 2015 biography.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But after the author\u2019s death in 2020 aged 89, his widow\u2019s death weeks later, and with agreement from surviving sons, he decided to include details in his new book The Secret Life of John le Carre as the \u2018pursuit of women was a key to unlock his fiction\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-12579327\/john-le-carre-affairs-new-book.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What a Le Carr\u00e9 on!
