<\/p>\nWHEN coming to the UK, foreign tourists often have places like London, Manchester and Edinburgh high on their to-do list.<\/p>\n
However, one German tourist considers another city much more of a highlight than anywhere else in the country – and it's a far less obvious holiday destination.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n
While others would plan a visit to Big Ben and Stonehenge, Rainer Schmidt would much rather head north for a trip to Hull.<\/p>\n
The Bavarian has been to the city more than 30 times, returning year after year to eat English breakfasts, meet friendly northerners and take in the Yorkshire countryside.<\/p>\n
Rainer's love affair with the city started on his first visit in 1991, when he came over for a business trip while working for a transport company with an office on Humberside.<\/p>\n
He was put in the Earlsmere Guesthouse, where he quickly made friends with the owner, Chris Lawson, whom he has visited pretty much every year since.<\/p>\n
On his most recent return, Chris arranged for Rainer to have a meeting with the Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Kalvin Neal, who thanked the German for his continued interest in the city.<\/p>\n However, it's never a chore for Rainer, who said he had "caught the Yorkshire virus!"<\/p>\n Speaking to the Hull Daily Mail, he said: "I try to spend four or five days here every year.<\/p>\n "I really fell in love with the English breakfast. I had seen it on TV and heard about it. British sausages aren't the best, so I make sure to swap them for extra bacon but otherwise, it is great<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n "I find northern people so friendly and warm – it reminds me of home when I'm here.<\/p>\n "The beautiful countryside and kind people are what makes Hull great."<\/p>\n There are other reasons why people might want to visit Humberside, with its cheap pints, beaches and award-winning attractions adding to the charm.<\/p>\n In fact, it's the cheapest place to get a pint in the country, according to hotel company\u00a0Accor, who claim a drink can be bought on average for \u00a33.33.<\/p>\n There's much more to Hull than cheep booze, however, with three beaches nearby.<\/p>\n The nearest to the city centre is Tunstall, which has been described as "a lesser used sandy beach", with "a huge amount of space so it never feels busy, even in the\u00a0summer\u00a0months" by\u00a0Yorkshire Beaches.<\/p>\n Additionally, there's Hornsea Beach, a blue flag beach near the\u00a0UK's best chippy, Whitehead's Fish & Chips.<\/p>\n The takeaway claimed top prize at this year's National Fish & Chip Awards.<\/p>\n As well as eating them, people in Hull can enjoy fishbefore that aren't on a plate, with one of the most famous aquariums in Europe at the heart of the city's docks.<\/p>\n The Deep is the top-rated thing to do in Hull on\u00a0TripAdvisor and has won a number of tourism awards over the last 15 years.<\/p>\n It describes itself as "one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world" and is home to\u00a0sharks, turtles, penguins and the UK's only Green sawfish.<\/p>\n One reviewer wrote: "To see so many underwater and land species was spectacular. Went as a couple but was amazing for children of all ages."<\/p>\n The aquarium can be found in a "dramatic" building overlooking the Humber estuary, but it's certainly not the most famous landmark over the river.<\/p>\n That title belongs to the\u00a0Humber bridge, which holds the record as the longest single span suspension bridge that can be walked or cycled over in the world.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/tp-composite-harrogate-1.jpg\")
