WHEN coming to the UK, foreign tourists often have places like London, Manchester and Edinburgh high on their to-do list.

However, one German tourist considers another city much more of a highlight than anywhere else in the country – and it's a far less obvious holiday destination.

While others would plan a visit to Big Ben and Stonehenge, Rainer Schmidt would much rather head north for a trip to Hull.

The Bavarian has been to the city more than 30 times, returning year after year to eat English breakfasts, meet friendly northerners and take in the Yorkshire countryside.

Rainer's love affair with the city started on his first visit in 1991, when he came over for a business trip while working for a transport company with an office on Humberside.

He was put in the Earlsmere Guesthouse, where he quickly made friends with the owner, Chris Lawson, whom he has visited pretty much every year since.
