A SMALL town in the UK is proving to be one of the country's best kept secrets, with plenty of holidaymakers unaware of its existence.

Everyone knows that there's plenty of great stretches of beach throughout the British isles, including in Wales, where there are several seaside towns perfect for staycations.

However, Barmouth seems to have escaped public knowledge, with some people saying English tourists just don't know that it exists.

The town has been described as "old fashioned" because of its retro seaside entertainment, including donkey rides and amusement arcades.

But in truth the town has much more to offer visitors, with a lot of recent upgrades making it an even better place for tourists.

One person who liked Barmouth so much that he decided to move there in 2020 is Dominic Vacher, who labelled it an "extremely beautiful area".

He told the Telegraph: "People in the south of England don’t know about Barmouth.

“And there’s lots happening right now, including new hotels and restaurants opening."

While that may be the case, it's the beach that acts as the primary draw for visitors.

The stretch of shoreline offers plenty of golden sand and waters that are perfect for paddling, swimming and surfing, depending on what you're most interested in.

Visit Wales described it as southern Snowdonia's "most popular seaside resort" and said: "Its big sandy beach is a magnet for visitors, yet there’s so much space along miles of unbroken sands that it never gets overcrowded."

Others have been even more enthusiastic about Barmouth beach on Google, where it has a 5/5 rating from hundreds of reviews.

One wrote: "Without a doubt the best beach I have ever been to into UK!"

Another said: "I would say it's the best place on Earth, love it here and highly recommend going."

A third added: "Best beach when weather is good. Nice little town, great walks."

One of those walks provides an even better vantage point of the popular beach, with the Welsh Flag Viewpoint and Panoramic Viewpoint situated high on a hill overlooking the sea.

Walking is another reason people love to visit Barmouth, with Eryri (Snowdonia) national park right on its doorstep.

The Snowdonia website boasts of "uninterrupted landscapes" containing "a wealth of treasures to discover and enjoy, from remote hidden pools to magnificent high peaks".

After a day of hiking and playing on the beach, there are plenty of places in the town to unwind, including its selection of pubs.

Among the favourites are The Royal, which one reviewer described as "definitely the best pub in Barmouth, maybe Wales".

There's also the Last Inn, which other reviewers have handed the title of the town's best boozer.

One wrote: "Best in town by far."

Meanwhile, there's also competition for the best place to eat as well, with restaurants like the Captain's Table, The Bank and Salt Marsh Kitchen among those fighting for the crown.

However, the Mermaid Fish Bar is pretty widely regarded as the best place in town for a chippy tea.

Food is also served at Ty’r Graig Castle, primarily a hotel with 11 en-suite guest rooms, all offering "stunning views of the local area".

Rooms in the castle start from £109 for two, including a sea view and breakfast.

Cheaper stays can be booked elsewhere from £81 a night for two.

One person who loved their visit to the town was Tiktoker Jessica (@jessicadjc94).

She shared footage of her trip, with some of her followers equally enamoured with the destination.

One wrote: "My favourite place in the world."

Meanwhile, these three beach towns are better in winter than in summer.

And you can watch dolphins while sipping pints in this UK seaside town.

</picture>LOCH AT THIS
