Working from the beach in the sun might sound fun, but one travel influencer has revealed that the digital nomad lifestyle isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Mark Wolters, from Illinois, created a YouTube video showing the ‘scary truths about the digital nomad life’ with 11 downsides highlighted.

His first gripe is how lonely life on the road can be, telling viewers: ‘You’re going to be lonely being a digital nomad because you are by yourself going around.

‘Yes, you can make some friends when you travel but a lot of the time it’s just other digital nomads.’

Mark Wolters from Illinois created a YouTube video showing the ‘scary truths about the digital nomad life’ with 11 downsides highlighted

Mark says it can be tough being away from friends and family and it’s hard making new companions

The third issue Mark highlights is finding somewhere to live as a digital nomad as it can be competitive with so many people trying to do the same thing

The globetrotter said when he was living in Lisbon, Portugal, he would have dinner by himself ‘night after night after night’

https://youtube.com/watch?v=J1D-ld1PJWM%3Frel%3D0

Mark goes on to explain that many digital nomads go on ‘meet ups,’ but these are ‘more like business transactions’ and they are not like hanging out with friends or ‘going to a [sports] game and bonding.’

He said when he was living in Lisbon, Portugal, he would have dinner by himself ‘night after night after night.’

Sticking to the theme of being lonely, Mark says it can be tough being away from friends and family and it’s hard making new companions.

He muses: ‘I want to tell you right now celebrating your birthday and no one’s around… celebrating that important holiday to you and no one’s around… that hits you.’

Time differences add to the problem, Mark says, as you will have to find suitable times to call home and ‘it doesn’t always work.’

Then when you eventually return home, the travel pro says you might feel even lonelier to find that friends and family have ‘moved on’ and ‘developed other relationships.’

The third issue Mark highlights is finding somewhere to live as a digital nomad.

He said when he was living in Portugal it was ‘super popular’ for digital nomads so it was harder to find a decent place.

He says some of the things to consider when looking for a base include ‘the safety of the city you’re going to, the internet connections that are there, [and] what else is there to do there.’

Mark Wolters, from Illinois, created a YouTube video showing the ‘scary truths about the digital nomad life’ with 11 downsides highlighted:

Vocalizing his fourth complaint, Mark says good internet isn’t always easy to find. He has previously had to pay for nights in hotels so he could get a better connection

The fifth ‘scary truth’ about digital nomad life is that locals could ‘resent… or even hate you’ for pushing prices up

If you run into trouble when you’re overseas, Mark highlights as his sixth pointer that you are less likely to have a ‘safety net’

On the subject of meeting people, Mark warns that ‘not every digital nomad is your friend’ and ‘some of them are not good people’

Vocalizing his fourth complaint, Mark says good internet isn’t always easy to find.

He has previously had to pay for nights in hotels to get a better connection and upload content to his social media channels.

The fifth ‘scary truth’ about digital nomad life is that locals could ‘resent… or even hate you.’

Mark says that digital nomads often earn more than locals, and therefore they can drive up prices and force locals out of city or town centers as things like rent and restaurant prices inflate.

He continues: ‘Also, restaurants and cafes, they see you just coming to use the internet and you’re just having one coffee that’s like a euro.

‘They see that, that could [lead to] resentment as well and some places will put out signs “digital nomads not wanted” or “time limited to one hour.”‘

If you run into trouble when you’re overseas, Mark highlights as his sixth pointer that you are less likely to have a ‘safety net.’

If something goes wrong, he says there is ‘no parent you can go see, no friend you can go and stay with… you’ve got no one to turn to.’

It can also be confusing about who is best to call in certain situations, Mark says.

To mitigate any confusion in the event of a mishap, he recommends trying to meet locals who can ‘help give you basic information’ and doing research before relocating to a new place to ‘make sure it’s right for you.’

On the subject of meeting people, Mark also warns that ‘not every digital nomad is your friend’ and ‘some of them are not good people.’

To keep safe, he recommends using ‘common sense’ and maintaining an awareness of any potentially dangerous situations.

In at number eight, one of the biggest misconceptions people have about being a digital nomad Mark says is that it is ‘romantic’ or ‘cool.’

In at number eight, one of the biggest misconceptions people have about being a digital nomad Mark says is that it is ‘romantic’ or ‘cool’

Addressing romance, Mark says finding long-lasting love when you’re traveling so much can be very hard

In at 10th place, Mark tackles the issue of making money and he says ‘that passive income… takes time to develop.’ He reveals that it took him four years to make any money online

Lastly, Mark warns that it’s not free to travel [and] it’s not free to live in all these places’

But he says ‘it’s not as romantic or cool as people show online’ and there are mundane things to take into account, like making sure travel insurance is up-to-date.

‘It’s not just look I’m getting my great Instagram pictures… no there’s a lot more to it,’ Mark tells viewers.

Addressing romance, Mark says finding long-lasting love when you’re traveling so much can be very hard.

While dating apps can help you initially, Mark says ‘really meeting people who you find a deep connection can be tough because people know you’re going to leave in a few months anyway.’

Then he says it is easy for time to pass by and ‘next thing you know you’re in your 30s, [and] you’re like, “wait a minute I don’t have anybody and I don’t even know how to meet people.”‘

In at 10th place, Mark tackles the issue of making money and he says ‘that passive income… takes time to develop.’

He reveals that it took him four years to make any money online and another four to make YouTubing his full-time job.

With this in mind, he warns people to have other income streams before fully embracing the digital nomad lifestyle.

Nowadays he says he does ‘pretty well’ and his video content ‘pays more than my bills.’

Lastly, Mark warns that it’s not free to travel [and] it’s not free to live in all these places.’

He continues: ‘You gotta pay for these things you have to have an income that’s going to support it, hence why you have people who do Bali, Thailand, Portugal… cheaper places to live [where] their money goes farther.’

While the traveler’s scary truths certainly shed a different light on being a digital nomad, he says he didn’t make the video to scare people away from taking that path.

He concludes: ‘I’m not giving you this list of things that people don’t mention to scare you off from being a digital nomad, I’m doing this list for you to understand the things you need to think about before you go into the digital nomad lifestyle because it’s fun. I love doing it.’

Scary truths about the digital nomad life
