A part-time coach with the Jesuit High School football team was fired after yelling at a player then punched him on his helmet during a game between their longtime rival, Tampa Catholic.<\/p>\n
The assistant coach for the Tigers, who was not named, became irate with the boy on Friday during the game the\u00a0 that took place in Tampa, Florida.<\/p>\n
The unnamed player, number 94, plays a defensive position for the team was running off the field before the ball was snatched by the opposing team moments\u00a0 before the incident took place.<\/p>\n
Disturbing footage which emerged on social media this week shows the assistant coach hit the player on the left side of his helmet. He then continues to scold him after the teen removes his helmet, according to the Tampa Bay Times.<\/p>\n
The student was not injured and the coach was dismissed.\u00a0The school’s president Reverend Richard Hermes, S.J. issued a statement to parents and students condemning the coach’s behavior stating that it ‘contradicts what the school stands for,’\u00a0The New York Post reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The player was not injured during the ordeal but the school reached out to the boy and his family\u00a0<\/p>\n

After the disturbing ordeal the coach was fired for his behavior and the school president issued a statement to the parents and students that they condone such behavior\u00a0<\/p>\n
Matt Thompson, the team’s head coach told The Tampa Bay Times when asked about the incident that ‘the matter was being addressed.’<\/p>\n
Former NFL player Kevin Hobbs, who serves as a defensive coordinator for Tampa Bay Tech High. Hobbs posted the video to X, formerly\u00a0Twitter, which garnered more than 1.5 million views.<\/p>\n
Hobbs issued his own statement on the ordeal, and added the hashtag #shameful.<\/p>\n
‘A coaches’ role extends beyond shaping young athletes into great football players; it’s about molding them into exceptional individuals within our society. You should NEVER reach a point where you find it necessary to engage in this,’ he said<\/p>\n
It is unclear at this time if legal action will be taken.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The school’s president issued a formal statement after the incident.<\/p>\n
‘I am writing to make you aware of an incident that occurred this past Friday night during the Jesuit home football game.<\/p>\n
‘Between plays on the field, one of our part-time assistant coaches struck a Jesuit player on the helmet as the player was coming off the field and onto the sideline.<\/p>\n
‘This behavior contradicts what the school stands for and is completely contrary to the expectation we have for coaches, moderators, and faculty members, who are to be role models for our students and mentors in their development as young men,’\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘We have reached out to the student, who was not injured in the incident, and to his family.<\/p>\n
‘We have met with the coach and informed him that he will no longer be coaching Jesuit football or assisting the school in any other capacity.<\/p>\n
‘The mission of Jesuit is to provide a Christian formation and education for our students. This requires that we maintain an environment for them that is safe, supportive, and conducive to their well-being and growth. This standard applies to all activities, inside and outside the classroom.<\/p>\n
‘We are reviewing our internal procedures and staff training to ensure that this standard is upheld by all Jesuit personnel, full-time and part-time.<\/p>\n
‘Thank you for your prayers and encouragement in helping us to better fulfill our mission,’ the statement read.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Jesuit High School football team won Tampa Catholic 66-35. It was the last game of the team’s regular season.<\/p>\n
