Love Island's Jack Fowler has revealed he was left "completely paralysed" a few years back as he secretly battled a health condition.

The TV star opened up about his experience on Instagram, sharing a video that showed him struggling to walk down the street. He told his followers that in the clip he had been showing early signs of Transverse Myelitis, which the NHS says is a rare neurological condition caused by inflammation of the spinal cord.

Jack, who was in the ITV villa looking for love in 2018, said days after the video was filmed he was paralysed. The TV star said he was "unable to move" and couldn't even dress himself.

"Hey people," he wrote. "So this post kind of took me a couple years to post because I wasn’t too sure if it was something I wanted you all to know. But I think just reflecting over the last couple months and how far I’ve come gave me some sort of courage to post & to hopefully give motivation to others.

"This was me a few years ago, with early signs of Transverse Myelitis. An extremely rare condition which we think stemmed from me having Meningitis a few months before.

"I woke up one morning and couldn’t feel my leg. Around 5 days after this video, I was completely paralysed down my left side with complete numbness down my right side – caused by inflammation across my spinal cord, blocking my central nervous system. With getting worse each couple hours/days and unable to move, life became completely different."

Jack, 27, said that he "needed help with everything, From cutting my food & eating to getting dressed & undressed," and called it "one of the most scariest times in my life."

As the condition is rare, the star said he had weeks of tests and seeing doctors but for a while was in the dark about what was wrong and whether he could recover. However, once he started treatment he went on to make "a 100% recovery that same year", telling his followers he was "a very lucky case as some people never recover".

Jack has recently taken part in the Love Island Games and said one of the reasons he signed up was to prove to himself that he could take it on, after what he had been through. "Everyone has dark times in life & sometimes you don’t see how you’ll get through," he told fans.

"But keep going. Keep focused. And don’t quit. And when you do, you’ll look back and realise how far you come."
