Dermot O’Leary will trade the This Morning sofa to join Paul Whitehouse on fishing a trip for a new segment.
Viewers of the ITV programme are set to learn about the presenter’s passion as he embarks on an angling adventure with the Welsh actor.
Keen fisherman Paul, who stars alongside Bob Mortimer Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, will share some tips and trick with the audience.
As This Morning celebrates its 35th birthday, producers are reportedly keen to ‘try out some new ideas’ as the main hosts don’t usually venture outside the studio.
A source told The Mirror: ‘Viewers will get to see Dermot in surroundings that they haven’t seen him in before.’
Exciting: Dermot O’Leary, 50, will trade the This Morning sofa to join Paul Whitehouse on fishing a trip for a new segment
They added: ‘Bosses are keen for their hosts to continue to try new ideas that might reflect passions or interests that may also appeal to their audience demographics.’
‘It’s the start of a new term, and whilst the show will remain true to its format with regular life saving health campaigns or makeover and transformation items – which is what This Morning do best – the team continue to look at how these can evolve and work hard to produce new items and films alongside them as the show approaches its 35th anniversary.’
It comes after Dermot opened up about being a father to a toddler and how becoming a parent has changed his priorities.
The television presenter lives in London with his wife Dee Koppang O’Leary and their son Kasper, three.
Speaking to The Times, he explained how much energy is required to keep up with his young son, saying it can be ‘full-on’.
Dermot said: ‘I turned 50 this year and being a dad to a three-year-old can be full-on. A mate who had twins just before Kasper arrived told me, “Don’t worry about how old you are, just make sure you stay in shape.” And he’s right. I took Kasper to the RAF Museum the other week and it was like an Olympic sprint, dashing from one exhibit to the next. As soon as we came out he said: “Can we go round again?”’
He went on to describe his love of family time, saying that the daily tasks of changing nappies or playing silly games were the best part.
Adventure: Viewers of the ITV programme are set to learn about the presenter’s passion, fishing, as he embarks on an angling adventure with the Welsh actor (Paul, L, with Bob Mortimer, R, on Gone Fishing)
He explained: ‘Dee’s work means that we’re not always together but, those evenings when we are, we make the most of spending proper time together as a family. I can’t understand those parents who don’t enjoy changing nappies or crawling around on the carpet pretending to be a racing car. Isn’t that the absolute joy of being a parent?’
Dermot added that his priorities in life had shifted with the birth of his son, from his material needs to how he wants to spend his spare time.
He said: ‘Having a child has changed what I want from life and what makes me happy. Do I need another car? The latest gadget? A bit of vintage Van Morrison vinyl? No, forget the material stuff. What I want is to be with the people I love. Being a dad puts the world in perspective.’
Dermot revealed that his wife Dee had given birth to their first child in an Instagram post in June 2020
