Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith separated seven years ago, she confirms
Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have been separated for seven years, the actress has revealed in a revealing new interview.
Jada, 52, opened up about her marriage to actor Will, 55, in interviews with PEOPLE and NBC News as she continues to promote her new memoir, which is titled Worthy. The mum-of-two said she and Will have been separated since 2016 but are yet to seek a divorce as they are "still figuring out" their future together.
Speaking to Hoda Kotb on the Today Show, Jada said: "By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be."
She went on to reveal she'd made "a promise" not to divorce Will, adding: "I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through whatever. And I just haven't been able to break that promise."
Jada, who married Will in 1997 and shares son Jaden, 25, and daughter Willow, 22, with the actor, also opened up about her separation from Will in an interview with PEOPLE. She revealed the couple are living separately but no permanent decisions have been made.
"We've been doing some really heavy-duty work together," she said. "We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like."
Jada, who is also step-mum to Will's son Trey, 30, who he shares with ex Sheree Zampino, went on to praise her children, branding them "little gurus".
"My children, they're little gurus. They've taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance. They love every part of me. The level of love, unconditional love that they have for me and their dad. And it's one thing to want to be the person that gives that unconditional love. And then there's, to be the recipient of that," she said.
Jada and Will's marriage was thrust into the spotlight back in 2020 when Jada admitted she'd had an affair with singer August Alsina, 31, on her Facebook chat show, Red Table Talk.
She and Will sat down for a chat together on the show and Jada opened up about her relationship August, which she famously referred to as an "entanglement".
Speaking on Red Table Talk, Jada said of her affair: โYes, it was a relationship. I was in a lot of pain. I was very broken. In the process of that relationship I definitely realised that you canโt find happiness outside of yourself.โ
