A FEAR OF SHORTS
I’ve regretted the lack of summer weather this year — our family holiday in Somerset could have used at least one hour of blue sky — but it brought a hidden blessing. No shorts.
A few years ago I got rid of all the shorts in my life.
Yes, they are the most comfortable and practical clothing for hot weather, but shorts — like headbands, mini-skirts and Peter-Pan collars — have an age limit, and I realised I had passed it well over a decade earlier.
I had also stopped being able to find a pair I liked or that suited me. Chino shorts? I just can’t.
Denim reminded me of Daisy Duke, khaki left me feeling like Indiana Jane and I have neither the thighs nor the audacity for cycling shorts.

CHIC YET COMFY
Anyway, I’m now facing a sudden week of scorching last-gasp summer and I have solved my shorts dilemma.
I have found a pair, and a way to wear them, that is comfortable, practical, but also chic.
Loose-fit with an elasticated waist — almost boxer shorts but suitable for daywear — they are everything I have been looking for: light and airy, and comfortable.
And if you wear them right, they’re effortlessly elegant, too.
GO FOR MATCHING SET
So how does a grown woman wear shorts?
This is where the co-ord comes in: matching sets are a sophisticated way to wear something that is anything but sophisticated, taking the humble shorts a long way from the idea of men’s underwear.
And the end-of-season sales are the perfect time to invest.
You’ve got today and tomorrow to pick up a set before what looks like being the best weekend of the year weather-wise.
