The converted school that's now the best pub in UK – with 366 gins & award-winning attractions nearby that kids love | The Sun

A FORMER schoolhouse converted into a pub has been voted the best in the UK.

And you can even stay the night, with six quaint rooms upstairs.

Cholmondeley Arms, in Cheshire, was given the award at the annual Great British Pub Awards.

Affectionately nicknamed The Chum by locals, owners Tim and Mary bought the pub in 2011, and converted the ex-schoolhouse.

The pub itself has a whopping 366 types of gin – one for every day of the year even in a leap year – as well as its own unique menu including a 'Cholmondeley Mess’ desert and their 'Cholmondeley Chaser' cocktail.

Events at the pub include their Cholmondeley Arms Car Club event alongside live music, gin tastings and themed menus including Greek Week.

When the weather is better, it has its own pub garden with tables and chairs.

And at the pub are six rooms, found in the Old Headmaster's House with names of former teachers including Miss Fritton and Mr Chips.

Ranging from "cosy", "comfy" and "roomy", each room has double beds and coffee machines, and they start from £110 a night.

Each room comes with either a shower or rolltop bath, as well as breakfast or brunch at the pub.

Tim Bird, owner of Cholmondeley Arms, said: “After all these years together, it means the world.

"When we opened, I said we can be a beacon of hope for rural pubs but now we can be an ambassador as the pub of the year for Great Britain.

"For the team, this is just amazing. Helen [the pub’s general manager] has worked at the Cholmondeley for 12 years and she is the epitome of what our pubs should be. I am so proud.”

People on TripAdvisor have been raving about the pub too.

One person wrote: "It’s just great to enjoy a country pub when everything is just perfect and the owners and staff just know what they’re doing. Exquisite."

Another person said: "It's a shame we live 2.5 hours away but probably a good thing as I would want to eat here all the time!"

A third commented: "Visiting the pub transports you to a scene from the past; idyllic old English countryside, warm hearty meals, and friendly service."

The pub is near the woodland attraction BeWilderwood, a technology-free kid's resort once named the best attraction in the UK
