Putin’s daughter hits out at Russia’s laws implemented during dad’s leadership

The punishment for dissenters under Vladimir Putin's regime can sometimes be deadly, but that hasn't stopped his own daughter hitting out at laws implemented during her own father's tyranny.

Putin’s oldest daughter Maria Vorontsova has been appointed to the board of the Moscow Society of Medical Genetics, and reports state that she has criticised patient care laws adopted under her dad's presidency.

A YouTube video of her speaking at a genetics conference in May shows her saying some practices related to informed consent were "cruel".

"It's a crude tool. I understand this as a patient. After all, the patient is given a pile of papers, which he signs without even [understanding] the details," she says, according to news outlet Mozhem Obyasnit.

It comes after reports last April that she had reportedly been banned from leaving Russia because of fears that she might never return to the country.

Dr Vorontsova, who was born when her father was still a KGB agent, had reportedly planned to celebrate her 37th birthday on a tropical beach, but according to the the General SVR Telegram channel, when she applied for permission to leave the country: “Putin responded with a categorical refusal, strengthening the security protection of Maria.

“According to our information,” the unconfirmed report continued, “the president’s eldest daughter did not plan to return to Russia.”
