The beach so beautiful it will make you forget it’s got a rude name
While it is normally said you can’t judge a book by its cover, when it comes to Playa de Poo it is certainly true you can’t judge a beach by its name.
Overlooking the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain, this pristine white sandy beach is a sheltered cove part of the Llanes municipality, Asturias.
Poo – pronounced “Po” in Spanish – is perfect for children thanks to its tranquil sea and shallow waters at high tide.
Its shallow stretch also makes the beach great for those who love paddling or simply want to relax and sunbathe while sitting in the sea.
Despite its name may lead British-speaking visitors to think otherwise, the beach is clean and well-serviced.

At Poo beach, people can find public showers, nearby parking, two cafes and toilets.
A sign that the beach is clean and a great spot for a day out if not a full holiday is that it is beloved by locals.
Many of its visitors over the years have taken to the internet to share their adoring views on the beach.
Tripadvisor user Philip H noted the name and the true nature of the beach don’t reflect one another, as he wrote on the website: “Great beach and despite the name always clean. I have visited several times on my various around Spain and it is beautiful rain or shine.”

Similary, Maria R wrote: “One of the most beautiful beaches in the Spanish north! Very fine sand, no waves, warmer water — perfect for little kids, paddle boarding, or just sunbathing.”
And Lesley B said of the beach: “We came to Llanes on a day trip from Ribadesella and found the beautiful Poo beach. Not a very nice name but it really is beautiful.
“There is a lovely cliff walk where you get a fabulous view of the castle. There are many bars and restaurants in Llanes. Ideal for a day out.”
Playa de Poo is part of the charming seaside town named Llanes, located just 60km away from the famous Picos de Europa mountains.
While the town is famous for its beaches, it is also worth a visit for its medieval walls and buildings.
Its harbour is also interesting, as it’s dotted with “Los Cubos de Memoria”, or Cubes of Memory – a breakwater made up of cubes decorated with vivid colours to represent the town’s history, its natural richness and the artist, Augustin Ibarrola.
