Zara McDermott’s boyfriend Sam Thompson opens up on moment he knew he loved her

Sam Thompson jokes about Strictly curse with Fleur East

Strictly hopeful Zara McDermott and Made in Chelsea’s Sam Thompson have been together for over four years, and the latter recently revealed he’s hoping to walk down the aisle with her.

Now, speaking in a new interview with Express.co.uk, the 31-year-old reality star revealed exactly what it was that made him realise he’d fallen head over heels for her.

The emotional celebrity, who has his own Hits Radio show, explained: “It was the time when Zara met my mum and she was just so loving to my mum and got along with her so well.

“She’s such a wholesome, warm-hearted person. I was like, ‘Wow. This person gets along with my family so incredibly well and they’re so polite and so sweet.’

“That means so much to me, so if anything, it was then, at that restaurant [that I realised she was the one for me].”

Sam Thompson shares a very close bond with mum Karen, who works in the real-estate industry as a property developer, interior designer and project manager.

The pair were spotted last year in Mykonos together soaking up the sun on the beach, leading many wowed fans to comment on what a youthful look she had.

During the new interview, which took place at the annual Back To Hogwarts event Sam was helping to host, he also spoke of how his mum was the one who first introduced him to Harry Potter.

Her decision to buy a copy of Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone for him would spark off a long-lasting obsession – and he’s still crazy about the fantasy novels today.

“It was the first proper book that I’d actually read and I couldn’t put it down… I went with my mum to Waterstones to go and stand outside in the queue [for book signings] too,” he enthused.

“I’ve always been a fantasy nut – I love being taken away to a different world. My family all know how much I love it,” Sam continued.

“My mum is a hardcore fan as well to be fair… but she’s not as into it as I am!”

Sam also shared his desires to delve into acting, revealing that he’d love to create his own character for a Harry Potter movie or TV series.

“If I could, I would! I’m probably such a terrible actor, but if they ever call me up. I’d be there!” he exclaimed excitedly.

Meanwhile, Sam is looking forward to supporting girlfriend Zara as she gears up for Strictly later this month, and has been waltzing around the kitchen with her as they attempt to perfect some Ballroom moves.

Earlier this week, rehearsals with the cast members began, and although there’s been talk of the so-called “Strictly curse”, which refers to the idea that participating in Strictly – as a celebrity or a professional – threatens the status of the relationship you’re in when you sign up, Sam has total confidence in his relationship.

He revealed on his Hits Radio show last week that even if Zara’s parents have been allocated “the majority” of tickets for Strictly, he’ll be there to support her, come what may.

“She only gets two tickets to go to the live shows and she’s already told me that she wants her parents to go to the majority of them so I’ll guess I’ll be standing outside,” he joked, before adding: “I don’t care, I will be there.”
