Emmerdale’s David star Matthew Wolfenden’s romance with co-star wife from split to secret wedding

Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden, who plays the role of shopkeeper David Metcalfe, met his wife when he joined the soap in 2006, they had a brief split before their surprise wedding.

Earlier this year, Matthew, 43, announced that he would be leaving the hit ITV soap after almost 20 years as he's "ready for a change". The soap star went on to appear on This Morning in September where he shared the news that he's landed the role of Buddy in the on-stage production of Elf the Musical for its festive run in London.

He went on to say that he was due to start rehearsals for the musical a matter of days after filming his final scenes in Emmerdale. As we prepare to say a fond farewell to Matthew in upcoming scenes, let's take a closer look at his life off screen with his former co-star and wife Charley Webb and their three children.

The couple first met when Matthew joined Emmerdale in 2006 and they started dating just a year later. Charley played the role of Debbie Dingle on the ITV soap and is also the younger sister of Hollyoaks star Jamie Lomas.

Matthew went on to pop the question to his then-girlfriend on Christmas Day in 2009. Their wedding plans were initially put on hold as they welcomed their first child, a son called Buster in April 2010.

In 2013, their relationship hit a rocky patch and they called quits after six years together. Despite their split, the TV stars remained close and continued to co-parent their son.

A few years later in 2015 they rekindled their romance and delighted fans as they announced they were back together. Matthew told The Mirror at the time: "It was never a permanent split, we just needed some time apart. Sometimes life just gets on top of you. We had a 'terrible' two-year-old at the time and needed time to look at what we had, but it was the best thing we could have done."

Ten months later they announced that they were expecting their second child together and in December 2015 welcomed their son called Bowie Grey. The soap star couple finally tied the knot during a secret ceremony in 2018.

They invited close friends and family to celebrate Charley's 30th birthday, only to surprise guests with a wedding instead. They were joined by 100 guests at Ripley Castle in Harrogate for the big day with Charley donning a long-sleeved sleek gown.

They welcomed their third son, Ace in July 2019 and occasionally take to social media to share family snaps. One of which showed Matthew with his son as they both wore matching cricket shirts, he wrote the caption: "Mini Me".

He also took to Instagram in July to update his 189K followers on Ace's potty training as his son peed into their kitchen sink. The doting father added the caption: "Ace: Dad I need a wee. Dad: Well go then. Ace does…"

Before joining Emmerdale, he spent five years on the West End and will soon return for his role as Buddy in Elf the Musical. He's also appeared in the musical Saturday Night Fever and in the Hollyoaks spin-off, Hollyoaks: Let Loose.

He took part in Soapstar Superstar in 2007 where he finished in ninth place and competed in the seventh series of Dancing On Ice where he was partnered with Nina Ulanova. His gymnastics and dance background certainly paid off as he went on to win the show, beating Jorgie Porter and Chico Silmani.
