A UK town is investing a staggering £80,000 to restore a "Glory Hole" in its city centre.

The subject of the repairs isn't a real glory hole but a rather racily-named walkway in Lincoln which was shut in February. Maintenance crews found a series of the walkway's original wood beams had broken and it was deemed unsafe, reports the BBC.

Now work is set to start on repairs to the X-rated path, but the news has left internet users divided. Some were left in hysterics over the plan to , while others said the news was "hard to swallow."

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) one wrote: "Ooo er," while another chimed in: "Life is like a glory hole, you never know what you gonna get." Others tagged their pals and asked: "You haven’t broken another one??"

Even less-than-pleased users couldn't help but make jokes. One wrote: "Many parts of the country are on its knees, is there a chance the figure will go down as that’s extremely hard to swallow." Another agreed: "That's a lot to swallow."

The news comes weeks after a racy glory hole story went viral online for all the wrong reasons. A series of voice notes posted to X said the alleged misadventure to took place during a joint hen and stag do in Amsterdam, the Daily Star previously reported.

According to the recordings, the anonymous pals were enjoying some pre-nuptial partying when one of the female revellers performed oral sex on one of the worst people imaginable through the hole in the wall.

The hole was allegedly designed so that if a button was pressed by both participants, a window between them would turn translucent and reveal who was on the other side. The recordings said: "Being drunk she thought it would be hilarious just to see who he was. So she pushes the button, looks up and it’s her dad on the other side."

The story has since been "debunked" but still left Brits reeling. Others bizarrely seemed intrigued and wanted a piece of the pie themselves, with searches for "glory holes near me" reportedly skyrocketing as per the stag do firm StagWeb.co.uk.

Officials said work to fix Lincoln's cheekily-labelled walkway, which leads to High Bridge in Lincoln's city centre, would involve reinforcing the existing timber piles and installing new beams. One of the challenges repair crews will face is the lack of access to the walkway which stretches over a river, said Lincolnshire County Council.

Workers may even have to perform some of the repairs from the water. However, Richard Davies, executive member for highways, stressed how important the work was. He said: "The truth of the matter is that this is a historic public right of way attached to a Grade II listed building, which is hard to reach and sits on the bank of a live, and very active, riverway.

"The work will be done as soon as it can be, without a needless threat to the safety of the experts who will carry it out, and it may take quite some time yet." The work is expected to begin in the new year.
