Setting your heating to ‘magic’ temperature at night could save you £300 a year
The weather may be getting colder, but us Brits are trying to avoid putting the heating on for as long as possible.
With bills remaining high, and budgets staying low, people are doing all they can to avoid overspending on bills. To help people save money this winter one expert revealed a simple stick that could save you hundreds each year.
The money saving hack will not only help you save a lot of cash, but it can also help you sleep better. All you need to do is adjust your heating to a certain temperature at night.

It turns out finding that sweet spot for your thermostat can not only ensure a good night's sleep, but can also substantially trim down your energy bills. Llewelyn Kinch, from MakeMyHouseGreen, explained lowering the thermostat can help your wallet and leave you sleeping soundly.
Many scientists and sleep experts say the ideal temperature to foster a good night’s sleep is 18° Celsius (C). It's not just a figure pulled out of thin air, as it's also a temperature that has been found to support the body’s natural cool-down process as we drift off into dreamland.
The average household in Europe tends to keep their thermostat set around 22°C, which may feel more cosy, but it's likely to push your energy bills higher.
Llewelyn said: "A simple reduction of this temperature to the scientifically backed 18°C, especially during the night, can lead to significant savings on your heating bills. In fact, making this small adjustment can save an impressive £333 annually according to our calculations."
By embracing the 18°C sleep temperature, you're not only creating an ideal sleep environment, but also acting smartly about your energy consumption. It’s a win-win situation where your comfort and finances are both taken care of.
This strategy can be particularly beneficial as energy consumption increases during winter, providing a simple yet effective method to keep those extra pounds in your pocket.
Earlier this month, experts also revealed the exact date Brits should start using the heating. Once temperatures outside drop below 15°C the NHS advises to put the heating on for health reasons, which means that in line with Met Office data, the date we can expect to use our heating is October 20.
From this date, temperatures aren’t expected to rise above 15°C for the rest of the year, although 2022 was a particularly warm year and saw temperatures of up to 23°C in October. If we are to have similar weather this autumn, then it will be around November 2 until the boiler is required to work hard.
Jess Steele, heating technology expert at BestHeating, said: "While there isn’t an optimum time to switch heating on, our research shows that once temperatures are below 15°C, usually in the middle of October, it is best to turn the heating on as we feel the chill more. By the end of the month, even the hardiest among us will have our heating on to keep warm as temperatures are predicted to drop further. If it is below 13°C outside then serious health issues can arise, especially in vulnerable people."
